Description
CoQ10
What Is CoQ10 and Why Does Delivery Matter
Coenzyme Q10, commonly known as CoQ10, is one of the most important molecules in human physiology. Every cell in the body depends on it to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary currency of cellular energy. CoQ10 exists in two interconvertible forms: ubiquinone, the oxidized form, and ubiquinol, the reduced form. In healthy individuals, approximately 80 to 98 percent of CoQ10 circulating in the blood is present as ubiquinol, which also functions as the body’s primary lipid-soluble antioxidant, protecting cellular membranes, proteins, and mitochondrial DNA from oxidative damage.
CoQ10 levels decline with age. Research shows a 10 percent reduction in aerobic cellular respiration per decade, with significant tissue-level losses observed by age 80 compared to age 20. Certain medications, particularly statin drugs, further suppress CoQ10 synthesis by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway. Individuals with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or chronic fatigue may also present with significantly reduced CoQ10 status.
The clinical challenge with CoQ10 supplementation has never been a lack of evidence for its benefits. The challenge has been delivery. CoQ10 is a large molecule, and its transfer across cell membranes is limited by transporters and receptors that do not efficiently move large quantities of CoQ10 from the bloodstream into the cell interior or the mitochondria. Standard supplementation raises plasma levels, but tissue delivery, particularly to the brain, muscle, and heart, can reach a ceiling regardless of dose.
The Role of Geranylgeraniol (GG)
Geranylgeraniol, known as GG, is a naturally occurring terpenoid and an essential molecule in human physiology. It functions as an upstream precursor in the mevalonate pathway, which is the same biochemical pathway the body uses to synthesize CoQ10 endogenously. Unlike CoQ10, GG has a molecular weight approximately one-third that of CoQ10, allowing it to penetrate cell membranes and organelles with high efficiency. In vitro studies have characterized GG as cell permeable and readily diffusable.
Once inside the cell, GG stimulates endogenous CoQ10 production through mass action, meaning it supplies the raw material and upregulates the pathway simultaneously. This intracellular route of delivery is the opposite direction from how exogenous CoQ10 travels, which largely depends on transporters moving the molecule from the blood into the cell. GG bypasses this limitation entirely by encouraging the cell to synthesize more CoQ10 from within.
GG also supports additional metabolic functions independent of CoQ10. It is involved in the synthesis of vitamin K2 (specifically menaquinone-4), which plays a role in calcium metabolism and bone health. GG supports healthy testosterone and progesterone synthesis, promotes normal inflammatory response, and contributes to skeletal muscle protein modification, a process called geranylgeranylation that is required for proper muscle function and repair. Statins deplete GG as well as CoQ10, and researchers have identified GG depletion as a key mechanism behind statin-associated muscle symptoms.
Suggested Use
Take one softgel per day with a meal. For maximum bioavailability, multiple doses of the 200 mg option may be taken at different times of the day. This formula is best absorbed when taken with food.
